[…] “Facing Athens”is dedicated to all those who love Athens or wish to understand it a little more deeply. Our intention was to search for the face of present-day Athens, guided by buildings which are standing and which help us follow the evolution of the city throughout the 20th century. This book is a travelogue of the Greek capital from 1900 to 2000, through the facades of the houses and apartment blocks in which the Athenians chose to live. These houses, all of which survive and which one can find and look at up close, are witnesses to an urban course in time which can offer us fascinating information about things which, though they may be right in front of us and form a part of our everyday life, yet remain unseen and allusive.
