Το βιβλίο αφορά τους τρόπους με τους οποίους οι οικονομικά και κοινωνικά περιθωριοποιημένοι άνθρωποι υφίστανται καθημερινά την απόρριψη.

Χρησιμοποιεί μέρος της ίδιας της εμπειρίας του συγγραφέα που ζει στη φτώχεια καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια των πρώτων 25 χρόνων του, καθώς μπαινοβγαίνει στη φυλακή, στο σύστημα περίθαλψης και την αστεγία, και πώς αυτός και οι συνοδοιπόροι του περιπλανώνται στα τραύματά τους και ο ένας στον άλλον.
