Τα κείμενα του τόμου αυτού επιχειρούν να προσεγγίσουν τη σκέψη του Κ. Καστοριάδη σε σχέση με τη σημερινή πολιτική και κοινωνική κατάσταση, να αναλύσουν την τόσο παρεξηγημένη και διαστρεβλωμένη -από τη γένεσή της στην αρχαία Ελλάδα έως τη σημερινή εποχή- έννοια της δημοκρατίας, να προσδιορίσουν την συμβολή του φιλοσόφου στην ανάδειξη της δημοκρατίας ως βασικού στοιχείου του προτάγματος της αυτονομίας, να συγκρίνουν επίσης τις ιδέες του με αυτές άλλων στοχαστών που εμφορούνται από την ιδέα της πολιτικής αλλαγής, να επισημάνουν σημεία προσεγγίσεως και αποκλίσεως, να αναδείξουν εν ολίγοις τη σημασία ενός σημαντικού έργου για τη δύσκολη κατάσταση που διέρχονται οι σύγχρονες κοινωνίες.
