In the fall of 1929, Amelia, her mother, and her grandmother are spending a typical afternoon in the living room of their little house in Janina (Ioannina), Greece: sewing, sipping coffee, chatting about marriage and work and education, when Amelia’s older sister, eighteen-year old Esther, bursts in, teary-eyed: she has been denied permission to emigrate to the United States, and thus must stay in Greece and enter into an arranged marriage with Israel, a local butcher twenty-years her senior.
