Όταν ο Κουκούτσης και η Αβγούλα συναντιούνται για πρώτη φορά, έχουν σχεδόν το ίδιο μέγεθος και σουλούπι. Αλλά καθώς μεγαλώνει η φιλία τους, μεγαλώνουν και οι ρίζες του Κουκούτση… τι συμβαίνει όμως με την Αβγούλα; Εκείνη, βγάζει φτερά και ανυπομονεί να τα χρησιμοποιήσει και να πετάξει.

Αν και ο Κουκούτσης θέλει πολύ να ακολουθήσει την φίλη του στις περιπέτειες της, οι ρίζες του είναι δυνατές και δεν μπορεί να το κάνει. Έτσι, την βλέπει να πετάει μακριά. Η Αβγούλα γνωρίζει έναν κόσμο μακριά από τον Κουκούτση.

Όμως, οι αληθινοί φίλοι πάντα βρίσκουν τον τρόπο, μέσα στον κύκλο της ζωής, να νοιώθουν συνδεδεμένοι ο ένας με τον άλλον και να ανταμώνουν· «να παίζουν παιχνίδια, να λένε αστεία και να κάνουν σχέδια», όπως ο Κουκούτσης και η Αβγούλα.
