Η γνωριμία του Φραντς Κάφκα με τη Φελίτσε Μπάουερ το βράδυ της 13ης Αυγούστου 1912 έμελλε να εξελιχθεί σε μια σχέση ζωής με πολλές αναταράξεις μεταξύ των δύο. Καρπό της σχέσης αυτής αποτελεί η μακροχρόνια αλληλογραφία τους. Όπως γράφει ο Ελίας Κανέττι: «τα συγκεκριμένα γράμματα […] είναι απαραίτητα στον Κάφκα για τα δικά του γραπτά». Αρχικά, ο Κάφκα γράφει στη Φελίτσε καθημερινά. Κατόπιν, διακρίνεται η αναποφασιστικότητά του και ο δισταγμός του να προχωρήσει σε γάμο μαζί της. Η αλληλογραφία τους, περνώντας από διάφορες φάσεις και σηματοδοτώντας τις μετεξελίξεις της ίδιας τους της σχέσης που είναι πολλές, θα διαρκέσει έως και το 1917, λίγα χρόνια πριν τον θάνατο του συγγραφέα. Το corpus των γραμμάτων του Κάφκα προς τη Φελίτσε αποτελεί σημείο αναφοράς για τη ζωή και το έργο του μεγάλου δημιουργού, και σφραγίζει μια ιδιαίτερη σχέση που τον καθόρισε.
